Bisexual or lesbian — please make up your mind

This is Real Sex, Real Answers: An advice column that understands that sex and sexuality is complicated, and worth chatting about openly and without stigma — and that, sometimes, that means reaching out to a stranger on the internet for help. Rachel Charlene Lewis is a long-time reader and writer within the sexual wellness space, and is never not talking about sexuality. So why not join the conversation? Just one of the many unfair, damaging things that marginalized people have to deal with is constantly navigating the space between being our most honest, truest selves and not wanting to feed into stereotypes. But I can say that at the center of healthy relationships is honesty, and the ability to be yourself. I would recommend figuring out the answers to the below questions, for yourself, and then making a move from there.

How to maneuver dating apps when you’re bisexual

Lighthouse therapist Deanna Richards offers advice for monosexual people in relationships with a bisexual partner. Bisexual people often occupy a challenging space between gay, lesbian, and heterosexual communities. We sat down with Lighthouse therapist Deanna Richards to discuss how both partners can communicate clearly and overcome the challenges that accompany dating someone of a different sexual orientation. Jealousy and insecurity can arise in any relationship, but may pop up more frequently in relationships in which one partner is non-monosexual.

This paranoia, says Richards, is typically a product of biphobia, or ingrained assumptions that bisexual people are more promiscuous than monosexual people, which is just one of many myths associated with bisexuality. Those same feelings of jealousy and inadequacy can fuel attitudes of bi-erasure in the monosexual partner.

Thanks to years of hard work by LGBT activists, people in certain corners of the world feel more comfortable about coming out than ever before. And yet, dating a man who identifies as bisexual remains a taboo. But by seeing bisexuality as a deal-breaker, heterosexual women might not only be unwittingly dodging perfectly decent partners, but the best.

Research has found that men who are bisexual – and feel comfortable being out – are better in bed – and the relationship develops – more caring long-term partners and fathers. Some women who took part in an Australian study even said they would never be able to go back to dating straight men at all. It turned out that straight men were the ones with more emotional and misogynistic baggage. This is partly due to the fact that as these men tried to understand their sexuality, they also questioned the most negative aspects of masculine character traits: including aggression.

To make their findings, she and researcher Sara Lubowitz studied 79 Australian women who had been with bisexual men. They were far more respectful. They were keen fathers and wanted to set up equitable gender relationships in the home. Additionally, the men were far more aware of sexual diversity and desire, so these men were more willing to engage in less heteronormative sexual acts, such as liking anal penetration by their women partners.

They were also up to explore novel sexual acts. Many women found themselves exploring BDSM, polyamory, and were themselves encouraged to explore same-sex relationships. Despite these findings, says Dr Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli, such pairings are little understood, both academically and among the public.

Would You Date a Bi Guy?

It surprises me how today, in , there are still so many misconceptions tossed around about the bisexual community, specifically dating a bisexual person. Together, he and I have busted some myths about dating a bisexual person. Being bisexual has nothing to do with being unfaithful. In short, attraction and infidelity are not the assumed uncontrollable urges for those with sexualities other than heterosexual.

Amber Rose, the model and famed ex of Kanye West, recently stated that although she is attracted to men and women, she would not date a bisexual man. Despite this lingering stigma, the experiences of heterosexual women in committed relationships with bisexual men have never really been examined. But the new book Women in Relationships with Bisexual Men does exactly that. Co-authored by Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli, a lecturer in Social Diversity at Deakin University, and her co-researcher Sara Lubowitz, the work is based on the insights of 79 Australian women involved with bisexual men.

We spoke to Pallota-Chiarolli about her findings. Why did you decide to study the “straight women with bi men” dynamic? For the last eight years, I’ve been looking at issues around relationship diversity, and I found that women really wanted to talk about this, because it hadn’t been addressed. What were some of your most surprising findings? A really beautiful finding from a lot of the women interviewed, which has shocked a few people, is that a lot of bisexual men—if you dealt with issues around openness and negotiation—made better fathers, lovers, and partners than hetero men.

Why do you think these women reported that bi-sexual men made better lovers?

At OprahMag. When I first met my now-husband in April , I made a point of telling him about my history of dating both men and women—and how I came out as bisexual at 16 years old to my friends and family, who offered mixed reactions. My friends were supportive; my family didn’t quite understand. But that confusion I first encountered with my parents is a common reaction for anyone who identifies as a bisexual person.

For me, this means that I am attracted to both cisgender men and women, though I am also attracted to others like trans women and men on the gender spectrum. I knew I was bisexual long before I had sex or even dated. I knew this because, from a young age, I recognized that I was attracted to all kinds of different people. Today, a lot of misunderstanding and stereotypes about bisexuality and bisexuals continue to perpetuate our culture. Here’s a short but nowhere near complete list of some of the things that bisexuals tend to hear on a regular basis:.

What It’s Really Like for Women to Date Bisexual Men

Another day, another study proving that people have some weird AF misconceptions about bisexuality. New research published in The Journal of Sex Research shows, like many other studies, that bisexual women are more likely to be thought of in a negative light than other women. The study asked heterosexual participants men and women to provide descriptions of heterosexual women, lesbians, and bisexual women.

They also were presented with descriptions of two characters on a date and asked to give an evaluation.

Research suggests that an increasing number of people are identifying as bisexual, especially women. A host of young female celebs have come out in recent years as bi-sexual, including Cara Delevigne, Kristen Stewart and Miley Cyrus. But bi men have very few high profile role models to aspire to. Bisexual men are deemed to be in the closet, in deep denial of their true sexuality.

But for me, I see my bisexuality as firmly set. Bi men face the discrimination that we will be unfaithful with a man if we have a girlfriend or a woman if we have a boyfriend. Many bi men feel inadequate. Not being able to be honest about who they are places a huge strain on their mental health. Gay people can come out and walk down the road holding hands with their same-sex partner and they have an identity, even if there are struggles they face.

But bi culture? Not so much. Many are trying to teach the world not to focus on labels — but some find the idea of bisexuality a threat to their proud identity. All other sexual orientations are deemed illegitimate or just a product of confusion.

You don’t have to label yourself as gay or straight, but the reasons why matter

Growing up in a small, working-class community in the Midwest, I was conditioned to go for a “manly” man. This was well before my progressive liberal arts education. I was attracted to men with large appetites and dirt under their nails. Men who worked hard, watched sports, and drank beer. Not-always-gentle giants with bad tempers and rough hands, like my father’s. Arran was far from that.

What’s your reason for not wanting to date a man who is bi? not matching his enthusiasm and it wasn’t fair to him so I ended it. Guys. I think I’m done dating. My thoughts are that im on a dating app in one of the biggest cities in the world.

We bond over attractive guys. All the guys I ever dated would get jealous or uncomfortable when I talked about finding other guys attractive, but with my current boyfriend, it actually brings us closer. Sex is so much better. We make our own rules and explore our chemistry based solely on each other and not on preconceived ideas of what sex between a guy and a girl should look like.

Our relationship is completely unique to us, and we keep finding new ways to make it interesting. My boyfriend is the least judgmental person I know. Having faced prejudice throughout his life due to his sexuality, he always manages to give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it helps that we have a lot more in common than my straight exes and I ever had, but my boyfriend and I are actually friends on top of all the romantic stuff.

We confide everything in each other, trust each other completely, and have similar interests. Being able to have a best friend and a partner in the same person is something I always imagined having but never experienced until now. People ask me a lot of stupid questions.
